Record breaking temperatures & Memorial Day

Friday, May 28th, 2010

It’s the eve of Memorial Day weekend and this past week Mother Nature gave us an early summer present of some record breaking temperatures. For three straight days it was near or above 90 degrees! For the folks still wearing their long johns around here, I imagine they took a break for those few days. Although the forecast looks cooler for next week, this weekend’s weather looks great.

During this upcoming family-fun weekend please take a moment to remember what it’s really about — honoring those who’ve served our great country as well as your loved ones that have passed on. Maybe take a moment to thank a veteran or active-duty soldier or head to your local cemetery/memorial place for a service on Monday. If you’re in Munising, the Veteran’s Memorial on the lakeshore is pretty neat. It is located next to Bayshore Park near the Pictured Rocks Cruises dock.

Well, have a great weekend and keep it safe. We hope to see you around!

Warm weather & future events

Thursday, May 20th, 2010

We’re just over a week from the big Memorial Day weekend and Mother Nature has been treating us exceptionally nice. This week, the temperature has been in the mid-70s, although, in town and along the Lake Superior shoreline it’s been 10-15 degrees cooler. The extended forecast is showing the same for next week and we’re hoping it continues through Memorial Day weekend. (Keep your fingers crossed)

Last Saturday, Pictured Rocks Cruises opened for the season while the Glass Bottom Boat Shipwreck Tours will start running tours tomorrow, May 21st. Then on Monday, May 24th the Grand Island Ferry Service will be making daily trips to Grand Island. All three of these family fun attractions are a must-see when you’re in the area. Learn more about them by visiting our Attractions page.

Other events happening include a golf scramble, this Saturday, at Pictured Rocks Golf Club. This annual fundraiser should be a great time with golfing, dinner and an evening dance with music by Evergreen Seven. Contact the course for details – (906) 387-3970. Then on Wednesday (May 26th), Munising’s new gift shop, The Frozen Flamingo, will be having its grand opening. Located next to the Days Inn, this trendy gift shop features great gifts and has an ice cream parlor serving Jilbert’s Ice Cream. Yum! The annual Pictured Rocks Trout & Salmon Classic fishing tournament rounds out the schedule of events with it taking place next Saturday, May 29th.

The weather is awesome and we hope you can come enjoy all Munising and Alger County has to offer! See you soon!

Shipwreck Tours offers evening cruise in 2010

Thursday, May 13th, 2010

Many folks have heard about the spectacular Pictured Rocks Lakeshore but Munising has another gem – Grand Island! This 13,000-acre island sits only 1/2 mile from the mainland and features some very impressive scenery of its own. New for 2010, the (very cool) Glass Bottom Boat Shipwreck Tours is now offering an evening cruise around the island. This 2 1/2 hour, narrated boat tour features some pretty awesome sites including towering cliffs, picturesque Grand Island East Channel Lighthouse and the Grand Island North Lighthouse. For the lighthouse enthusiasts, this is one of the only ways to see the North Light because it can’t be viewed from land (privately owned). The North Light sits on a 175-foot cliff, which makes it the highest lighthouse above sea level in North America. (That’s pretty impressive!) The evening cruise will only be running in July and August and it’s the same price as the standard shipwreck tour cruise. Come to Munising and check it out this summer! There’s nothing like enjoying the scenery and a sunset on Lake Superior!

In other news, the Upper Peninsula saw snow over the weekend! Some areas received over 6 inches of the white stuff. Since then, the weather has turned around and we’re back to more normal temperatures. The weather for the walleye/pike season opener on Saturday (May 15th) also looks good. Have a great weekend!

New Munising Adventure Guide Available!

Tuesday, May 4th, 2010

After several months of researching, collaborating and designing, the new Explore Munising Adventure Guide is now available for purchase. This 36-page travel guide, of the Munising area, features a variety of information for those traveling to this great Upper Peninsula destination! Currently, the booklet is being offered in an online version (PDF), which allows you to download and print at home. Besides the booklet, it also comes with a larger format PDF (8.5″x14″: legal size paper) featuring a variety of area maps including markers for the waterfalls, lighthouses, points of interest and local businesses. The guide also has an abundant amount of information for Pictured Rocks National Lakeshore, Hiawatha National Forest and Grand Island Recreation Area. In the near future, the booklet will be printed traditionally so readers can get a high quality copy. To learn more and purchase your own Munising adventure guide, visit our guide webpage on Explore Munising.

In other news, the area finally received some much-needed rain over the weekend; and the temperatures were in the 70s, which made it really nice. Also, with our early arrival of spring, the bugs have also made an early arrival. They aren’t too bad but I’d recommend putting some insect repellant in your pack if you’re headed for the woods. The weather looks decent for the week until you see Saturday’s prediction… “Chance of rain and snow showers.” Yes, the dreaded “S” word is in the forecast! We’ll keep you updated on this subject matter!
