Roller coaster weather & trout opener

Thursday, April 22nd, 2010

Sorry to sound like a broken record, but once again the weather has been like a roller coaster lately. One week we have beautiful weather then the following it’s extremely cold. For example, last week we had temperatures near and above 70 degrees for quite a few days. Then over the weekend, it turned cold and it was snowing by Friday and Saturday. The snow wasn’t staying on the ground but it didn’t make it great to go outdoors. Oh well, what can you do. We’ve been spoiled for the last month, or more, and these cold days are just normal U.P. spring temperatures.

In other news, this Saturday is the opener for the trout season. There are quite a few trout streams in the Munising area which hold beautiful brook, brown and rainbow trout. With the  lack of rain, the streams are pretty low for this time of year and it will be interesting to hear how the fishermen do. Please continue to do the rain dance and let us know your fishing success stories!

Below are some pictures from around Munising during the warm weather streak.

The Traditional April Snowstorm

Monday, April 12th, 2010

Well, the unthinkable happened last week. It actually snowed! During any other year, there’s usually one (or two) good April snow storms so it’s not that uncommon. With our extremely dry and warm March 2010, having it snow in April was kind of the unthinkable.  The trees are starting to bud, the spring flowers are popping out of the ground and everyone is looking forward to summer. Then last Thursday a quiet storm system moved into the region and left its mark on the central and eastern Upper Peninsula. While most April snowstorms dump a couple feet of snow, this storm only produced 6-10 inches of snow. By the following day, the temperature was in the 50s again and the snow was pretty much already gone.

Like March, April is starting off with warmer than normal temperatures. According to the National Weather Service, the first 11 days of April have been the warmest on record! We are also extremely dry despite the recent snowfall and the fire danger is still consider quite high. Everyone should be doing the rain dance, we desperately need it!

Hovercraft Benefit This Friday!

As for events, head to Sydney’s Restaurant this Friday (April 16th) for a fundraiser to purchase a new hovercraft for Alger County. There will be raffles, door prizes, a silent auction, cash bar and music by Double Trouble. This life saving vehicle has rescued several individuals over the years and they are in need of a new one.
